Katy Perry is Billboard Woman Of The Year

Congratulations to Katy Perry who has just been confirmed as Woman of the Year by Billboard! The magazine says that the award “honors the achievements of a trailblazing female recording artist over the past 12 months, and acknowledges her overall success in the music business and her leadership in embracing the changing industry.” Katy will accept the award at the 2012 Billboard Women in Music Event on November 30 in New York City.

It’s quite understandable why Billboard wanted to honor Katy in this way given her incredible success. She is the only woman to score five no.1s from one album on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. That album, ‘Teenage Dream’, has spent more than 100 weeks on the Billboard 200 and sold 2.5 million copies in the US. Katy has sold 48 million tracks in the US with four of them – ‘Firework’, ‘California Gurls’, ‘E.T.’ and ‘Hot N Cold’ among the 30 top selling downloads of all time.

“Katy Perry broke into the industry not even five years ago, and has already accomplished more than most artists can hope for in an entire career,” says Bill Werde, Billboard’s editorial director. “We are thrilled to celebrate these incredible achievements and her amazing past 12 months by honoring her with the Billboard Woman of the Year Award. With what seems like a never-ending supply of record-breaking, chart-topping hits, coupled with her unique and fresh style, Katy Perry is hands-down one of the most exciting and inspiring artists in the industry today.” We couldn’t agree more!

Coldplay confirm November release for Live 2012 film and album

Coldplay have announced the November 19 release of ‘Live 2012′, their first concert film/live album for nine years. It documents their acclaimed Mylo Xyloto world tour which has been seen by more than three million people since it began in June 2012. The band will also release their new single ‘Hurts Like Heaven’ on the same day.

Coldplay Live 2012

The film was directed by Paul Dugdale, previously responsible for Adele’s Live at the Royal Albert Hall and The Prodigy’s Worlds On Fire concert films. ‘Live 2012′ includes footage from Coldplay’s shows at Paris’s Stade de France, Montreal’s Bell Centre and the band’s triumphant Pyramid Stage headline performance at Glastonbury 2011.

Says Coldplay frontman Chris Martin: “The Mylo Xyloto tour has been the most fun we’ve ever had as a band. It’s felt very uplifting right from the start; partly because we are proud of the music, the LED wristbands, the pyrotechnics, the lasers and all of that stuff, but mainly because of the amazing audiences that we’ve been playing for. Over the years, our crowd has become more and more a part of the concert itself. They’re loud, diverse, full of soul, and make the songs sound much better than we can on our own. We wanted to try to bottle the incredible feeling that they give us, and hence our concert film.”

‘Live 2012′ will be released by Parlophone on CD/DVD, DVD/CD, Blu-ray/CD and digitally. It is available to pre-order now on www.coldplay.com.

David Bowie to release 40th anniversary 7″ of The Jean Genie

On November 19 EMI will mark the 40th anniversary of ‘The Jean Genie’ with a series of collectable 7″ picture discs that celebrate the anniversary of the original release of David Bowie‘s UK singles.

Originally issued in the UK via RCA on November 14 1972 ‘The Jean Genie’ was the first single taken from his then still-to-be released album ‘Aladdin Sane’. Bowie was now a superstar, writing on the run while touring. After the best part of a decade looking to achieve stardom Bowie now had it and he wasn’t going to waste one second. ‘The Jean Genie’ is probably the most thrilling encapsulation of this giddy time. It reached number two on the UK singles chart in December 1972.

The B-side of this 40th anniversary version will have the audio from the recently-recovered BBC Top of the Pops performance of ‘The Jean Genie’ from January 1973 which captures the blazing confidence of Bowie and the fabled Spiders from Mars. Both tracks have been remastered by original Trident engineer Ray Staff and superb, in-era shots illustrate both sides of the vinyl. ‘ The Jean Genie’ is available in a strictly limited run.
