New York-based mainstream imprint to be run in partnership with Crush Management
New York, 15 June 2011 – EMI Music is to launch the next phase in I.R.S Records’ history with the rebirth of the imprint as a frontline label, it was announced today.
I.R.S. Records will be operated in a new partnership between EMI Music North America, and Crush Management’s Jonathan Daniel & Bob McLynn. Signings to the new I.R.S. will be announced over the coming months, with the first releases expected towards the end of the year.
I.R.S. Records was launched in 1979, and was the home to groundbreaking artists including R.E.M., The Go-Go’s, The Alarm, The Buzzcocks, John Cale and The Dead Kennedys during its 17-year history.
The new agreement extends the hugely successful relationship between Crush and Capitol & Virgin Label Group President Dan McCarroll. They previously worked together in McCarroll’s former role as Executive Vice President of North American Creative at EMI Music Publishing, on the recent re-emergence of Train, as well as helping the development of artist/songwriters including Butch Walker, Panic! At the Disco, Travie McCoy, Gym Class Heroes, and Cobra Starship into gold and platinum acts.
Dan McCarroll commented: “We are thrilled to be able to bring back the I.R.S. Records brand, and we believe that EMI and Crush will be able to recapture some of the spirit of adventure and excitement that the original label brought with it. Jonathan and Bob are incredibly talented guys with a real love for music. They believe in genuine partnership, and they’re up there with the smartest in the business. The combination of their team with EMI’s talented global staff will be a real force to be reckoned with.”
Jonathan Daniel commented: “Things sure have changed since mixtapes were made with actual tape. One thing remains true – we still love rock n roll. We want I.R.S. Records to recapture the spirit of artistic freedom its original groups like R.E.M. and the Dead Kennedys represented. To quote the immortal words of Joe Strummer, ‘the future is unwritten.’”
Crush Nashville’s John Grady said, “I would quote an old Rod Stewart record with ‘A nod is a good as a wink to a blind horse’. To follow a theme, I would hope to honor the legacy and the spirit of I.R.S. with the new music we discover.”
Crush Management is a NYC based company run by two former musicians. Together they handle such best selling acts as Train, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, Travie McCoy & Gym Class Heroes, Cobra Starship, Sia, Butch Walker, Wavves, Chiddy Bang and many others.
