LONDON, ENGLAND – 2 OCTOBER 2009 – The winners of the 2009 Classic FM Gramophone Awards were announced at a ceremony in London on 2 October. Congratulations to the EMI & Virgin Classics artists responsible for winning in each of the three categories in which they were finalists
RECORD OF THE YEAR: Quatuor Ebène performing quartets by Debussy, Fauré and Ravel (519 0452). On hand to accept the award was the Quartet’s violist Mathieu Herzog. The Quatuor Ebène performs a recital of works by Brahms, Bartók and Schubert at the Wigmore Hall on 30 October.
WINNER – OPERA: Puccini Madama Butterfly with Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kauffmann and the Orchestra and Chorus of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia conducted by Antonio Pappano. (264 1872). Antonio Pappano, currently conducting Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, collected the award.
WINNER – HISTORICAL RECORDING: Composers in Person (217 5752) This 22-CD set features a wide range of modern composers, among them Holst, Prokofiev, Messiaen, Shostakovich, Britten, Stravinsky and many others, performing their own works on the piano, organ or violin, or conducting them from the podium.
