New Depeche Mode album number one in 20 countries

LONDON, 1 MAY 2009 – Sounds of the Universe, the acclaimed new album from Depeche Mode, has reached number one in 20 countries in its first week of release, outperforming the first week sales of their last album Playing the Angel. In another 10 countries the album is in the top three, including their native UK, where it is currently number two, and in the US, where the band’s number three entry was their highest American chart debut since 1993.

In addition to standard physical and digital formats, Sounds of the Universe has been available as the first ever iTunes Pass from Apple as well as a deluxe box set edition including exclusive new songs, remixes, demos, two photo books and a DVD.

Sounds of the Universe, which came out worldwide on 20th April (21st April in the US), is Depeche Mode’s 12th studio album. It is the first to be released globally through EMI following the signing of a new deal between the band and EMI’s Mute label last year. Previously Depeche Mode were with Mute/EMI for the world outside of North America.

Next month the band will start the European leg of ‘Tour of the Universe 2009′. Kicking off in Tel Aviv in Israel on 10th May, they will play live to over two million people over the course of 33 stadium concerts. Their 24-date North American tour starts on 24th July in Toronto after which the band will perform in South America before returning to Europe for more shows.

Ahead of these live dates, last Thursday, 23rd April, the band played a free concert for over 16,000 fans on Hollywood Boulevard. They performed a seven song set, with two tracks, current single Wrong and Personal Jesus, airing live on national US TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Daniel Miller, chairman of Mute Records, said: “Once again Depeche Mode have made a superb groundbreaking record which is being embraced by their incredible fan base around the world. The great team effort from everyone in the band, their management led by Jonathan Kessler, Mute and EMI, has enabled us to develop a well planned and focused campaign and as a result we’re off to a very strong start for Sounds of the Universe.”

As one of the most influential bands of the post-punk era with global sales in excess of 100 million, Depeche Mode belongs to a select premiere league of super groups who first became successful in the early 1980s and have kept their ideals, creative vision and core members intact. The band – Martin Gore, Dave Gahan and Andy Fletcher – continue to win critical and commercial acclaim across the world both in the studio and on the road. All of their 11 previous studio albums have reached the top 10 in the UK, the USA and in 20-plus countries around the world.
