Congratulations to Katy Perry who has just been confirmed as Woman of the Year by Billboard! The magazine says that the award “honors the achievements of a trailblazing female recording artist over the past 12 months, and acknowledges her overall success in the music business and her leadership in embracing the changing industry.” Katy will accept the award at the 2012 Billboard Women in Music Event on November 30 in New York City.
It’s quite understandable why Billboard wanted to honor Katy in this way given her incredible success. She is the only woman to score five no.1s from one album on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. That album, ‘Teenage Dream’, has spent more than 100 weeks on the Billboard 200 and sold 2.5 million copies in the US. Katy has sold 48 million tracks in the US with four of them – ‘Firework’, ‘California Gurls’, ‘E.T.’ and ‘Hot N Cold’ among the 30 top selling downloads of all time.
“Katy Perry broke into the industry not even five years ago, and has already accomplished more than most artists can hope for in an entire career,” says Bill Werde, Billboard’s editorial director. “We are thrilled to celebrate these incredible achievements and her amazing past 12 months by honoring her with the Billboard Woman of the Year Award. With what seems like a never-ending supply of record-breaking, chart-topping hits, coupled with her unique and fresh style, Katy Perry is hands-down one of the most exciting and inspiring artists in the industry today.” We couldn’t agree more!
