Pink Floyd redefine their EMI legacy

Very exciting news today that there will be a new major release campaign for Pink Floyd encompassing CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, SACD, an array of digital formats, viral marketing, iPhone Apps and a brand new single-album ‘Best Of’.

The legendary band, whose association with EMI dates back to 1967, recently signed an agreement with EMI which has allowed the development of a multi-format programme of packages, many containing archive material that has been collated during an extensive process between EMI and Pink Floyd for a range of media formats.

Pink_FloydThe releases, under the banner Why Pink Floyd…?, are designed to appeal to a wide cross section of their fans, with music to excite first time listeners, while super-deluxe box sets will cater to dedicated fans, allowing them to immerse themselves in multi-disc sets, containing alternate takes, unreleased tracks, restored live concert screen films and a live recording of the legendary The Dark Side Of The Moon performance at Wembley in 1974.

  1. Andrea,

Please use original analog tapes for mastering vinyl not digital!

  2. Fred Landry,

I can’t believe that no vinyls will be included in this box set. CD’s are dead, high quality digital music and vinyl’s is the way to go. Hope you will release a vinyl only box set, this I will pay good money for and P.S. vinyl’s cannot be copied so it’s all good for you!

  3. Schmidt Zoltán,

A stúdióalbumokat SACD-n is kiadhatnák… MORE SACD version, please!

  8. BOB LYNCH,

    “Hello.
I’m writing on behalf of Pink Floyd and surround sound fans around the world to petition for a 5.1 surround mix of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” to be mixed and included in the upcoming Immersion Box Set to be released in February 2012. Like most other Pink Floyd fans, I was very excited when I heard the news that Pink Floyd were reissuing expanded versions of their most famous albums, but I was very disappointed to discover that unlike the other two Immersion boxsets, there was to be no 5.1 mix included in the box set for The Wall. Without a 5.1 mix, most fans feel this box set is currently incomplete, especially considering the fact that 4 out of the 7 discs are already available commercially. Look to the model established by the other two Immersion box sets, and please include a 5.1 mix of the Wall on DVD & Blu-Ray disc in the upcoming Immersion box set. We wouldn’t even mind if the release date had to be postponed in order for a 5.1 mix to be included. Thanks for you time, and I hope you will see more fans like me writing in to express their discontent on this issue.”

  9. Tim,

Me too, would be very happy with more (hybrid) sacd’s and / or high resolution downloads with digital booklet (192khz/24bit).

I’m a stereo-guy, but I know many Pink Floyd-fans are hoping for more albums to be released as 5.1 sacd or blu-ray-audio.

I really do hope one day the whole EMI backcatalogue will be available in high resolution audio … still listening to those few EMI sacd’s (Talk Talk, Simple Minds, Bryan Ferry, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd DSOTM, Norah Jones, Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode, Moloko,…).
Check the prizes of the Out of Print sacd’s at ebay and Amazon. Please give us well-mastered (no loudness wars etc.) high resolution music, and people will fall in love again with music (they forgot to enjoy music due to mp3 and loudness wars)…

Some preferred EMI-artists for high resolution releases: Norah Jones, Kate Bush, Bat for Lashes, Beatles (the USB already sounds good), Intergalactic Lovers, Roisin Murphy, Depeche Mode, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, Goldfrapp, Coldplay, Beach Boys, Blur, David Bowie, Daft Punk, Hollies, Nick Cave, Electric Light Orchestra, Enigma, David Gilmour, Gorillaz, George Harrison, Elvis Costello, Interpol, Lady Antebellum, LCD Soundsystem, Madredeus, Paul McCartney, Kylie, George Michael, Röyksopp, Stranglers, Joss Stone, KT Tunstall, Robbie Williams, Empire of the Sun,… + classical and blue not releases.

  10. Lars Olaussen,

The Wall deserves 5.1 treatment. And I know a lot of others agree. If it will cause a delay for the Immersion set that’s fine. :)

  11. Tetlee,

Thank God WYWH is finally being released on SACD, but please more SACD releases, most would be perfect for the format, you can start with The Wall and Animals please.

  12. Ariel,

This is great news. Let us hope that the original masters are used and that the biggies -the wall, wish you were here, animals etc come in high resolution 5.1 format.

  13. John,

Please release all the albums in surround sound, preferably in SACD

  14. AudioFan,

I want everything on SACD only.

  15. Dylan K,

I was excited for this until I read the specific details. The only surround mixes, or even hi-rez mixes for that matter, announced are Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here? I already have DSotM on SACD, and while I’m pumped to finally get WYWH on SACD, we all know the surround mix has been laying around for years just looking for an excuse to finally be released. I’ll buy it the day it comes out, but that’s what I really want. More hi-rez, preferably surround mixes of these great albums. I already have these albums. If you want me to buy them again, I need more than a bunch of outtakes, alternate takes, and other left overs someone found laying around in storage. Release The Wall and Animals and all these other great albums, SACD or Blu-ray (preferably SACD) or however you want, but give us something NEW, not just the same old stuff repackaged.

  17. Robert,

Hi all, as stated by others as well, a hi res 5.1 Blu Ray would be a great addition to The Wall box. Thanks for reconsidering the contents of The Wall box.

  18. Wolfgang,

I also would be glad to see all these albums as SACD-re-releases !!

  19. eyeCalypso,

Yes, we the paying fans with money to burn in our pockets want a good 5.1 mix and High Resolution audio (at least 24bit/96kHz) of the Wall. Also, vinyl lp’s are desirable.

  20. Örjan Johansson,

    “Dear Sir.

  21. Svante,

Why no “The Wall” Blu-ray audio disc?
And it would be nice if this also was available separately, please! These deluxe box sets are great for the “collectors” but all I want is the original albums, well mastered and released on some kind of High-Res disc, preferably Blu-ray.
Looking forward to the WYWH SACD on Analogue Productions which luckily is available separately.

  22. Kees,

I would really like a high res stereo & multichannel version on Blu Ray in the The Wall Immersion Box set. I understand a 5.1 mix is not lying on the shelf, but a high res stereo version should at least be possible.

Would you decide on an Atom Heart Mother Immersion box set, please reissue the available 4.0 in High Res.

Please consider high res BD discs in every future set. People who buy these sets are not the MP3 generation who don’t care about sound quality. We are the collectors who care a lot about “the best it can be”!

  23. Chris V,

I can’t believe how wrong emi can get the release of the Pink Floyd albums. I have no problem with immersion sets, some will want them. I don’t want yet another remastered cd, all I want is a hybrid sacd surround version of the albums. emi did a great job with dsom sacd, yet the wywh sacd is not being released by emi, will cost a minimum of $50 to those not living in the US, add unknown postage and import duty costs and you have an over priced albubm, which many want but cannot afford. The way the sacd release has been handled alienates fans of pf and shows emi has no real interest in them whatsoever. No wonder I don’t buy emi albums given their short sighted policies. Please just give us an album that is genuinely different, not another remaster, give us a regular priced sacd surround version of pf albums. You did it for the 30th anniversary edition of dsotm, which was very successful, so why not for these other releases.

  24. Don Cramer,

I’m very grateful that WYWH is being released as an SACD; however, the rest of the Pink Floyd catalogue needs to be released in the SACD format as well! Surely they deserve the finest reissues possible with today’s technology – and I ain’t talking CDs or other low res formats!

  25. Michael,

Please include a 5.1 mix of The Wall in it’s respective Immersion Box Set. That would be fantastic!

  26. Peter Suthers,

These Immersion Box Sets are all very well for a few very wealthy very dedicated fans. What about the rest of us who just want to enjoy the music? I have most of the albums in stereo on CD which is a perfectly acceptable quality, and I speak as someone who worked at Mayfair Studios on “The Final Cut”, so I do know what I am listening to! I have the 5.1 “Dark Side” SACD. I have the quad vinyl WYWH, which would sound great except for the very evident shortcomings of vinyl. Please release surround mixes (4.0 is ideal, or 5.1) on a single inventory hybrid SACD, if re-mixing is too costly then use the original qad masters. That way people can hear the original stereo mixes as close to the master tapes as is possible on their CD player or SACD player, and those of us who like surround can play the same disk on our surround systems. That way everyone is a winner, and EMI sell loads of disks, the accountants will be happy & more surround back catalogue will get released. As it is I doubt if the Immersion Box Sets will actually recoup their mastering, manufacturing and publicity costs, let alone make a prophet.

  27. Tim,

What I forgot to say yesterday: I would prefer if all the sacd’s were made by Analogue Productions just like “Wish You Were Here”.

If this got released I’ll be buying all the sacd’s + 192kHz/24bit high resolution files (dvd-a, bd-a, download)

    Top 10 – Favourite EMI sacd’s:

    01. Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon”
    02. Human League “Dare”
    03. David Bowie “Ziggy Stardust”
    04. Roxy Music “Very Best of”
    05. Simple Minds “New Gold Dream”
    06. Goldfrapp “Supernature”
    07. Norah Jones “Come Away With Me”
    08.Talk Talk “Colour of Spring”
    09. Moloko “Statues”
    10. Kraftwerk “Minimum-Maximum”
and last but not least: Depeche Mode backcatalogue (hybrid sa-cd + dvd)

I do hope Analogue Productions will get the chance to release the whole Pink Floyd backcatalogue as hybrid sacd. Maybe later some other artists too?

People no longer want “ordinary cd’s’. Those who don’t care about soundquality download mp3′s/aac … Those who care about soundquality will prefer decently mastered high resolution audio and vinyl. It’s time to move on.

  28. No.9,

PLEASE!!!! more warmth and depth. The Wall immersion box set without 24/96-192 or stereo SACD??? It’s disappointing to see such an encompassing release presented in a non Hi-def format. The subtle nuances made this album GREAT! Surprise, surprise, surprise……….Is there anybody out there!
Thank you for the Blu-ray discs to be included in DSOTM and WYWH…And a special thanks to Analogue Productions, for the up coming 5.1 SACD of WYWH.

  29. Isauro,

Please issue 5.1 SACDs of The Wall, Animal and The Division Bell!!!

  30. Geoffroy,

No 5.1 for The Wall? Then, I won’t open my wallet once more to obtain something I already got. The album, the live compilation, I got them already. The demos? They’re in the wild for more than two decades in very high quality. The only reason PF fans are gonna buy this set is if it contains asurround mix, just like WYWH and DSOTM.

  31. Ed,

I’m very excited about the “Why Pink Floyd?” campaign and the release of the Immersion box sets for Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall. Considering the first two releases will both offer 5.1 multichannel surround sound mixes of the albums, I think it’s only fair that The Wall is given the same treatment. The fans want it. We deserve it. It would be a disservice to Pink Floyd fans worldwide if a 5.1 surround mix of The Wall is not considered for inclusion in the Immersion box set. Thanks for listening.

  32. Pal,

The only way to listen to PF is on vinyl, SACD or live. Please consider releasing more SACDs.

  33. Poul-Erik Borre,

    Please! More 5.1 / 2.0 Hi-Res versions on SACD and/or Blu-Ray

  34. Tony Hartley,

Please remix The Wall for 5.1 sound and release in high res on blu-ray like DSOTM and WYWH.

I would prefer the blu-ray discs to be available separately.

And, while we’re at it, please release the entire Beach Boys catalogue in high res on blu-ray – with new wide stereo and 5.1 mixes where possible. There is a lot of money to be made!

  35. Allan,

All of the Pink Floyd catalogue in full multi-channel 5.1 SACD treatment is the only way to honour Pink Floyd in the manner that the band ttuly does deserve to be treated.

  36. Steve Burke,

    Hello,
Please hold off on the Immersion set of The Wall until James has a 5.1 mix ready for a high resolution Blu-ray disc to be included.

The Immersion sets are a little out of my price range, I am really only interested in getting the Quad and 5.1 mixes of the albums in high resolution, so PLEASE consider releasing stand-alone SKU’s of the Blu-ray versions of the albums. I would gladly upgrade my SACD copy of DSOTM to a stand-alone Blu-ray copy to have both the 5.1 and Quad mixes on the same disc.

    Cheers,
    ~burkey

  37. Joel,

I am glad that the DSOTM and WYWH immersion sets include a 5.1 mix of the album, not to mention the original quad mix, but the fact that the Wall immersion set does not makes it practically useless since most Floyd fans, The Wall fans in particular, already possess all of the mixes being released in the immersion edition, whether in genuine or bootleg form. Some coasters and a scarf are not going to sell a set which doesn’t include new and unique material. I will be purchasing the DSOTM and WYWH immersion sets, but for me, the Wall set has no draw. I will, of course, rethink that decision, should a 5.1 mix be included in the set.

  38. Garmr,

Finaly WYWH on SACD. We need more 5.1 releases please.

  39. Peter Hahn,

Why no “The Wall” Blu-ray audio disc or at least a DVD-A? Can’t believe you’re NOT doing this!

  40. Johan Hendrix,

As with other music, I hope that this gets available on SACD (stereo or multichannel, depending on the available source material). This really is a benefit with good equipement.
It’s already a pitty that the Rolling Stones’ SACD’s are out of stock.

I also don’t know what’s avaialble from EMI Japan, but please start distributing the SACD’s that you have there worldwide (also classical music, e.g. the Furtwänger series).

  41. Gary,

The Wall in SACD 5.1 surround, please.

  42. etzeppy,

Please give us 5.1 with this

  43. Tian Li,

Please release Pink Floyd on Super Audio CDs with 5.1 MCh surround sound!

  44. David Olstein,

In order to be truly definitive, the Wall box set should feature the original full length version of the album, which was significantly edited prior to its original release in order to fit onto 2LPs. So let’s finally get the missing song restored, and the full length versions of songs like Mother and Run Like Hell. And yes, we should get it in high res stereo and 5.1 surround.

    • Daniel Enochsson,

Wow, I didn’t know that it was shortened.

It would be very interesting to hear the original version. If it were available, I would buy it in an instant (in addition to the ~6-7 copies I’ve already bought.)

+1, we need all Pink Floyd albums in hi-rez and surround

  48. Marcel,

    The Wall on SACD please.

  49. Barry Irvine,

Dissapointed that i will have sign up to a company abroad and pay $50+$44 postage to get WYWH sacd in the U.K. Why not offered direct in the U.K.

Would have been tempted to buy one of the box sets if it was included there.

More Sacd releases please and sell them to us direct here in the U.K.
